I realized today that I’ve had this blog for 4 years now, since 2006. And over those years, I’ve found that I’m not a particularly good blogger. I’ma lousy blogger because I don’t update frequently and my content is all over the place – and I’m beginning to realize that the two are related. I want to blog about my professional life, my side business projects and everything in between and become paralyzed by too much information and end up writing nothing at all.

So, starting today, I’m going to clearly delineate my interests by my projects and other interests. It’s still all on one blog – but separate by categories for those only interested in one of the subjects.

There is now a category for my “Honey Project”, “Tutoring Company”, “Sales and Marketing, Startup Operations”, and “All Other.”

One of my main motivations for starting this blog has been to explore toipcs I don’t really know much about. There are a lot things that I want to know more about, and I will be sharing more these topics in future posts.

I realized tonight that I’ve been really risk-averse when it came to this blog because I am aggressively looking for a job, and I know that when I am sending out my resumes, my potential future employers google me, and read this blog.

It’s too easy to only post safe “sales related” stories (because I am looking for a sales job) and pictures I’ve taken over the years. But it’s a very incomplete picture of who I am, and if anything, I want to come off as intellectually curious – which means taking enough risks, to make occasional failure/blunder/screw-up a real posssibility.

Cartoon by Peter Steiner. The New Yorker, July 5, 1993 issue (Vol.69 (LXIX) no. 20) page 61

If and when I actually get around to writing something on this blog, I immediately begin to think about who, if anyone, will read it and, inevitably, what will it say to them about me. I start thinking about everyone I know: my friends and family, my co-workers, etc. I also start to think about all the I will meet in the future…

These thoughts are often paralyzing enough to stall an idea from being developed on these pages – and the blog remains unchanged for days.

It’s not that I have very controversial or socially subversive ideas – I am just not sure what impact these words have on those who read them and what the blog says about who I am.

As one blogger points out, there are two basic identities that exist about you:

Your reputation: This is your identity as created by others. By definition, you can’t control it and I suppose this is the area that I am concerned about affecting negatively with this blog.

Your self-image: This is the story you tell about yourself. This blog has exists because I want anyone who is interested in getting to know me better to be able to easily find me online and learn as much as they please.

The bottom line is that I can’t control what others think of me, and what opinions of me are formed after reading this website. What I can control is what I say about myself and types of topics and discussions I am willing to have publicly in this forum. As long as I am honest, open and thoughtful in what I say – I shouldn’t be worried. It is incumbent on the reader to not jump to conclusions and not to judge me based any particular posting. The whole idea behind this blog to for me to write down my ideas and to develop them over time.

As such, I would like to declare my right to fully disagree with myself in the future for the freedom to openly express myself today.

I’ve been thinking about how I can utilize this forum for a purpose more meaningful than a public diary. I realized that a blog is a form of publishing – and that I can almost treat it as my own little magazine – that I publish myself. But what’s my niche? I can’t keep writing on an array of topics completely unrelated to each other. I need a purpose.

So then I thought – well – what would I enjoy reading about? What type of information is most interesting to me – to explore and learn more about. And more importantly, what type of information can I generate original content for?

There are many different types of blogs out there – for example check out this list 20 types of blogs – or this more concise list of 3.

While thinking about what my blog type should be, I generated a random list of content I could generate:

Work Related: I’ve thought about doing a work related blog – which would discuss all the different issues and creative solutions I encounter at work.

Activist/Political: I’ve also thought about doing an activist blog – which would promote a certain policy or course of action. For example, I could rally against what I consider to be completely unfair and bloated federal farm subsidies. Or I could pick a local issue, like fiscal responsibility in state and city government and discuss that.

Journalistic: I mean “journalistic” in terms of the word journalist, rather than a diary. I could act as a journalist and write stories about local events and issues by following them myself.

grantgrigorian.com will likely remain a random collection of thoughts and remarks about me personally. But I want to create another blog, which will focus specifically on a particular topic. This way, I will be more motivated to post regular, thoughtful entries.
