Informational Interview With a Benefits Lawyer
What better way to learn whether you want to be a lawyer than talk to a real-life, practicing lawyer? Well, I am not sure if there is, so a couple of months ago I sought out a lawyer to talk to for an informational interview.
I was able to find an employee benefits lawyer who works in a large law firm downtown Denver, who got her law degree from University of Colorado at Boulder. She responded to my email and graciously agreed to meet me for lunch.
It was interesting to talk to her, and to find out the type of work she does, what her concerns and challenges are, etc. Certainly the billable hour is an important concert at her firm. The hours demanded seem almost incomprehesible, 60 – 70 hours per week being the norm.
In general, she left me with the impression of a very professional woman who is good at what she does, and the firm as a very intellectually stimulating environment with a lot of demands out of you.
I can’t say it made me want to work hard to be able to work for a law firm though. I don’t know how hard it would be to be away from famil and friends so much.
So, now I am as confused as ever.
